Bengal Handloom Sarees

Bengal Handloom Sarees

Bengal weaves the most wearable cotton in India. Not the most ornate and rarely the most expensive — but the cotton that people actually put on in the morning and keep on all day. The clusters across Nadia, Bardhaman, Murshidabad and Shantipur have been producing it for centuries, and the qualities that made it valuable then are the same ones that make it valuable now: it is fine, it breathes, and it gets better with washing.

Mul cotton

Mul is the finest of the Bengal cottons — a soft, closely woven, almost sheer cloth with a very high thread count for a handloom fabric. It is light enough to pack into nothing and cool enough for the worst of an Indian summer. New mul has a slight crispness that washes out over the first few wears, after which it becomes progressively softer. A well-used mul saree after two years is a different and better fabric than it was on day one.

Bengal jamdani

Jamdani is the ornamented end of Bengal handloom, and it is one of the most labour-intensive weaving techniques anywhere in the world. There is no jacquard, no punch card and no machine assistance. The weaver lifts individual warp threads by hand and lays each motif in with a fine bamboo needle as the cloth advances on the loom. A dense jamdani saree can take two weavers several months. UNESCO recognised the tradition on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the Bengal and Bangladeshi clusters between them hold almost all the surviving skill.

How to recognise real jamdani

The reverse shows the working. Real jamdani has trimmed thread ends and a slightly raised motif on the back. A printed imitation is flat on both faces.

Motifs float. They sit on the base cloth as discrete inlays, not as continuous woven bands.

No two motifs are identical. Hand-laid work varies. Machine work does not.

When to wear it

Mul cotton is a daily and workwear saree — the checks and stripes in this collection are made for regular wear, not occasions. Jamdani sits higher: a handwoven jamdani with an inlay border is entirely appropriate at a wedding, a festival or a formal event, and it does that job while still being cotton and still being breathable.

Care

Mul cotton can be hand washed cold in mild detergent after the first dry clean. Do not wring — press the water out and dry in shade, because direct sun fades handloom dyes fast. Starch lightly if you want the original crispness back. Jamdani should be dry cleaned to protect the inlay work. Store both folded in cotton, refolding along different lines every few months.

Our Bengal collection

Sourced directly from Bengal weaving clusters.
