It is not a decorative fabric and it was never meant to be. Mul is the cotton people wear when they have to be dressed properly and comfortable at the same time, all day, in the heat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eWhat makes mul different from ordinary cotton\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo things: thread fineness and weave density. Mul uses a much finer yarn count than standard handloom cotton, woven closely enough that the cloth holds together while staying translucent. The result is a fabric with almost no weight but real structure — it drapes cleanly, holds a pleat, and does not cling. Most mul comes out of the Bengal clusters, where the spinning and weaving skill for very fine counts has stayed concentrated.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eIt gets better, which is unusual\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eNew mul has a slight crispness from the sizing used during weaving. That washes out over the first few wears, and from there the fabric softens progressively with every wash. A mul saree you have owned and worn for two years is a genuinely nicer fabric than the one you bought. Mul is the fabric to reach for on the days when a silk would be punishing and a synthetic would be worse.
