Assam has more handlooms than any other state in India, and an unusual reason why: weaving there has never been only a trade. It has traditionally been a household skill, practised at home on family looms, and the state has by a wide margin the highest number of weavers per capita in the country. That domestic scale shows in the cloth — Assam handloom cotton is honest, sturdy, and made to be worn rather than displayed.

What the cotton is like

Assam handloom cotton has a slightly heavier hand than Bengal mul — a firmer, more substantial cloth with a visible weave texture. It holds a pleat well without starching, does not cling, and stands up to frequent washing far better than a fine mul. The striped and checked weaves in this collection are typical: colour worked directly into the warp and weft rather than printed on afterwards, which is why the pattern is identical on both faces.

How to tell handloom from powerloom Assam cotton

• Check the selvedge. Handloom edges are slightly uneven and often show a subtle change in tension. Powerloom selvedges are ruler-straight.
• Look at the reverse. On a woven stripe or check the back matches the front exactly. A print does not.
• Feel for variation. Hand-thrown weft creates minute differences in density across the length. Perfect uniformity is a machine signature.
• Small joins are normal. A knotted yarn join here and there is evidence of hand weaving, not poor quality.

Care

Dry clean the first time to set the colour. After that, hand wash cold in mild detergent, separately for the first few washes because handloom dyes can bleed. Never wring. Dry in shade — direct sun will fade the colour noticeably within a season. Iron on medium while slightly damp. Cotton improves with washing; it will soften each time without losing its structure.
