What this buys

Handwoven Chanderi silk-cotton, finer Assam and Bengal handloom cotton, and matka silk — hand-spun textured silk with a matte finish. Matka in particular is worth attention here: it is real silk, it works in an office, and it sits well below the price of a smooth silk of comparable quality.

The sweet spot for a working wardrobe

This is the tier to build from if you wear sarees regularly rather than occasionally. The pieces are good enough to wear to anything short of a wedding, robust enough to wear often, and priced so that owning four or five is realistic. Rotating between several is also better for the cloth — handloom lasts considerably longer when it gets time to rest between wears.

Care

Matka and Chanderi are dry clean only. Cotton can be hand washed cold after an initial dry clean. Dry in shade in all cases; direct sun fades natural dye within a season.
