Chanderi Suit Sets

Chanderi is woven in a town of the same name in Ashoknagar district, Madhya Pradesh, and its defining quality is transparency — hold it to the light and it glows rather than blocks. That comes from a specific technical choice: the weavers use raw, non-degummed silk in the warp, keeping the natural sericin coating that most fine fabrics have boiled off, and pair it with cotton in the weft.

What that means to wear

The silk warp gives sheen and drape. The cotton weft keeps it breathable. The result is one of very few fabrics that is simultaneously dressy and genuinely cool — a Chanderi kurta reads as formal but does not become punishing in heat the way a pure silk does.

It is also almost weightless. A Chanderi suit set is the thing to reach for when the occasion calls for something more than cotton but the weather does not permit anything heavier.

How to identify genuine Chanderi

• Hold it to light. Real Chanderi is translucent with an even, visible weave grid.
• It feels cool and slightly glassy — not soft and fuzzy. The non-degummed silk gives a distinctive hand.
• Check the butis. Traditional Chanderi motifs are needle-woven one at a time, and the reverse shows small cut thread ends. Printed motifs are flat on both faces.
• Chanderi carries a GI tag. "Chanderi-style" on a listing generally means it is neither from Chanderi nor woven this way.

Care — Chanderi is fragile

Dry clean only. The fine warp will not survive machine washing, and the sericin that produces the transparency washes out in water — once it is gone the fabric loses the quality you bought it for. Iron on low with a cotton cloth in between; the silk scorches easily. Store folded in muslin and change the fold lines periodically. Never hang a Chanderi garment long-term — the weight distorts the weave.
