What to Wear to an Indian Wedding

Dressing as a wedding guest is a narrow target. Too plain and you look like you did not make an effort at somebody's most important day. Too heavy and you are competing with the family, which nobody thanks you for. And whatever you choose has to survive several hours of standing, eating and being photographed.

The safe territory

Pure Chiniya silk in a deep shade is close to foolproof. The sheen carries the occasion, the fluid drape photographs well, and because there is no embellishment there is no risk of overshadowing anyone. Wine, royal blue, turquoise and deep purple all work across skin tones and lighting.

Banarasi with a woven zari border is the more traditional answer — clearly festive, clearly handwoven, and the ornament stays at the border and pallu rather than running all over.

Tissue and premium linen suit sets are the option for daytime functions, mehendis and sangeets where a saree is more than the event needs.

Practical rules that actually matter

  • Avoid red and heavy gold at a Hindu wedding — that is the bride's territory. Deep jewel tones are the safest ground.
  • Check the timing. Daytime functions want lighter fabric and lighter colour; evening receptions take depth and sheen.
  • Consider the day, not the hour. Most Indian weddings run long. A saree you cannot sit down in comfortably is the wrong saree.
  • Let one thing lead. If the weave is doing the work, keep the jewellery quiet, and vice versa.

Order in time

Everything here is supplied as fabric to be tailored to your own measurements — which means you need to allow for stitching time on top of delivery. Dispatch is within 1–2 working days and delivery takes 3–7, so give yourself at least three weeks before the event if a blouse or a suit needs to be made up.

Care

Zari is dry clean only. Store folded in cotton or muslin and refold along a different line periodically so the metallic thread never sets into a permanent crease.
