Why handloom cotton for daily wear

Handwoven cotton is less tightly compressed than mill cloth. The yarn is not beaten in as hard, which leaves air space in the fabric and produces real airflow rather than the damp cling of a mill-woven blend. In an Indian summer that difference is not subtle.

It also softens rather than degrading. The sizing used to stiffen yarn during weaving washes out over the first few wears, and the cloth improves from there — unlike fine mill cotton, which pills and thins with the same treatment.

The three cottons here

• Mul cotton — the finest and lightest. Near-sheer, best for the hottest months, and the softest of the three after a few washes.
• Assam handloom cotton — firmer and more substantial, with woven stripes and checks. Holds its shape through a working day and stands up to frequent washing.
• Chanderi cotton — sheer and luminous, with a faint sheen. The dressiest of the cottons.

Several sets carry hand shibori dyeing, embroidered panels or printed dupattas worked over the base cloth.

Every set is unstitched — kurta fabric, bottom and dupatta as listed under Set includes on the product page. It is tailored to your own measurements by your tailor. There is no size chart because there is no size to choose.

Care — read this before the first wash

Dry clean once to set the colour. Then hand wash cold in mild detergent, separately for the first few washes — handloom dyes bleed, and one shared wash with something white is an expensive lesson. Never wring. Dry in shade; direct sun fades natural dye visibly within a season. Iron on medium while damp. A light starch brings back the original crispness if you want it.
