Daily wear handloom cotton sarees and suit sets — mul, Assam and Bengal weaves.
Breathable, easy to wash, built to be worn often.
Everyday Handloom
Most of what gets sold as handloom is bought for occasions and worn twice a year. This collection is the opposite — cotton woven to be put on regularly, washed regularly, and replaced only when it genuinely wears out, which with good handloom takes a very long time.
Why handloom cotton is worth it for daily wear
Three practical reasons, none of them sentimental:
- It breathes properly. Handloom cotton has a looser, less compressed structure than mill cloth, which means real airflow rather than the damp cling you get from a synthetic blend.
- It improves. The sizing used during weaving washes out over the first few wears and the fabric softens progressively from there. A mul cotton saree at two years old is a better fabric than it was new.
- It survives washing. Assam handloom cotton in particular stands up to frequent hand washing far better than fine mill cotton, which pills and thins.
What is here
Mul cotton — the finest and lightest, near-sheer, best for the hottest months. Assam handloom — firmer and more substantial, woven checks and stripes, holds a pleat without starching. Bengal handloom — fine, soft, with woven colour rather than print. Kota Banarasi — light enough for daily wear despite the zari, if you like dressing slightly up.
The unstitched suit sets do the same job for anyone who does not want to drape on a weekday morning, and being tailored to your own measurements they fit better than anything off a rack.
Building a rotation
Four or five daily pieces in colours that all work with two blouses will get you further than a dozen that each need their own. Rotate rather than repeating — handloom lasts considerably longer when the cloth gets to rest between wears.
Care
Dry clean once to set the colour, then hand wash cold in mild detergent, separately for the first few washes because handloom dyes bleed. Never wring. Dry in shade — direct sun fades natural dye within a season. Iron on medium while damp.
