Indian festivals are long days. A puja that starts in the morning, a family lunch, visitors through the afternoon, a function in the evening — often in October heat. The saree that looks best in photographs and the saree you can actually spend fourteen hours in are not usually the same garment, and most people learn that the hard way.

Festive without the weight

The pieces here are chosen to solve that. Kota Banarasi gives you real woven zari on a cloth that weighs under 400 grams — it is the most comfortable festive saree in the Indian wardrobe, and the reason it has stayed popular for generations. Chiniya silk in a deep wine or royal blue reads as occasion-wear through sheen alone, with no embellishment to add bulk. Jamdani gives you handwoven ornament on a breathable cotton or linen base. Chanderi is sheer, luminous and almost weightless.

Choosing by occasion

• Morning puja or daytime function: Kota Banarasi, Chanderi, or a light jamdani. Nothing that will be uncomfortable in the heat.
• Diwali or Karva Chauth evening: Chiniya silk in a deep shade, or a zari-bordered Banarasi.
• Family gathering across a whole day: cotton Banarasi or matka silk — festive enough, forgiving enough.

A note on styling

Handwoven fabric does not need help. When the weave is doing something interesting — a zari pallu, a jamdani inlay, a dual-dye — the blouse and the jewellery should stay quiet. A plain contrast blouse and oxidised silver will almost always look better than a matched set.

Care

Anything with zari is dry clean only — water tarnishes metallic thread permanently. Store folded in cotton or muslin, refolding along a different line every few months so a crease never sets into the zari. Never plastic.
