Every saree here was woven on a handloom by a person, sourced directly from the cluster it came from. There is no middle layer of wholesalers between the weaver and this page, which is why we can tell you where each piece was made and what technique produced it.

The most useful way to shop handloom is by weave rather than by fabric, because the weave is what determines how a saree looks, drapes and lasts.

• Kota Banarasi — featherweight Kota Doria cotton with real woven zari. Under 400g, and the most comfortable festive saree there is.
• Chiniya silk — soft-sheen Banaras silk with a fluid drape. Silk without ornament.
• Matka silk — hand-spun, textured, matte. The one silk that genuinely works in an office.
• Banarasi — five centuries of supplementary weft weaving, in silk, cotton and Kota.
• Jamdani — each motif laid in by hand on the loom. A UNESCO-recognised tradition.
• Bengal handloom and Assam handloom — the cottons people actually wear every day.
• Chanderi — sheer, luminous silk-cotton from Madhya Pradesh.

How to buy handloom online without getting it wrong

The gap between a handwoven saree and a powerloom copy is enormous in price and almost invisible in a photograph. A few things to check on any site, including this one:

• Does the listing name the weave and the origin? "Silk saree" tells you nothing. "Pure Chiniya silk, Banaras" tells you what you are buying.
• Is the reverse shown? Handwoven supplementary weft leaves visible thread floats on the back. Prints do not.
• Is the fabric composition stated? "Art silk" means polyester.
• Are irregularities acknowledged? Any honest handloom seller will tell you that minor variation in weave and shade is normal, because it is.

What you receive

Our sarees are supplied as the drape, with blouse fabric where the description says so. They are not ready to wear — the blouse is stitched to your own measurements, which is why you will not find a size chart on our pages. If you need approximate fabric lengths before ordering, write to us and we will measure the piece.
